Mayflies

Scientific Classification:

- Order: Ephemeroptera 

Physical Appearance:

- Four wings: two forewings and two hindwings

- Forewings are bigger than the hindwings

- Three segments on its body part: head, thorax, abdomen

- The second segment of the thorax is larger for holding the flight muscles

- Three pairs of legs, a pair of antennae, large compound eyes and three ocelli or simple eyes

- Life cycle: egg - naiad - mayfly (adult)

- Incomplete metamorphosis

Food Source:

- Naiad: Usually omnivorous - feed on small plants and animals in the water

- Adult: Does not eat or drink
