True Bugs and Cicadas

Scientific Classification:
- Order: Hemiptera

Lantern Fly
Physical Appearance:
- It's a bug not a fly
- Moderate to large size
- Does not emit light despite their name 'Lantern'
- Has an elongated snout which is used for sucking saps
- Has three pairs of legs
- Four wings: two forewings and two hindwings
- Life cycle: egg - nymph - adult
- Incomplete metamorphosis
Food Source:
- Nymph and adult: Feeds on lychees and longans tree sap


Stink Bugs
Physical Appearance:
- Two pair of wings: either entirely membranous or in the form of hemelytra where the forewings are hard and the hindwings are membranous
- The entirely membranous hindwings are usually shorter than the forewings. The wings are held either upwards covering the body or flat on its back
- Three pairs of segmented legs, a pair of usually five-segmented antennae, a beaklike mouthpart which is for piercing plant tissue and sucking out saps or liquids, a relatively small head
- Life cycle: egg - nymph - adult
- Incomplete metamorphosis
Food Source:
- Nymph and adult: feed on plant sap


Cicada
Physical Appearance:
- A pair of large eyes located at the side of its head, three small eyes on top of its head, a pair of short antennae, membranous front wings, three pairs of legs, a mouth for sucking sap from trees and plants
- Three segments on its body: head, thorax, abdomen
- Only males produce distinctive sound
- Mating songs emitted by cicadas vary according to species
- Live in temperate to tropical climates
- Newborn nymphs burrow and live in the ground for a few years depending on the species
- In the final growing phase, they emerge and shed their skins
- Life cycle: egg - nymph - adult
- Incomplete metamorphosis
Food Source:
- Nymph: feed on root juice
- Adult: feed on tree and plant sap
