Ants, Bees and Wasps

Scientific Classification:
- Order: Hymenoptera

Ants
Physical Appearance:
- Most queens and males have membranous wings and they are fertile except the ordinary workers and soldiers which are sterile females
- Three segments on its body part: head, thorax, abdomen
- Has a pair of antennae, compound eyes, three pairs of legs with a claw on each leg, mandible
- Most workers have stings for defense and subduing preys
- They work together in almost everything especially in search for food for the colony
- Life cycle: egg - larva - pupa - ant (adult)
- Complete metamorphosis
Food Source:
- Larva: Depends on regurgitated food from adult ants
- Adult: Generally predators, scavengers and indirect herbivores. Some are known in obtaining nutrients from fungus


Bees
Physical Appearance:
- Mostly have two pairs of membranous wings: Forewings are larger than the hindwings
- Three segments on its body part: head, thorax, abdomen
- Has a pair of antennae, three pairs of legs, mostly have stings, a long proboscis, compound eyes, plumose hair, mandible, some have striped abdomens
- Produces honey and beewax
- Life cycle: egg - larva - pupa - bee (adult)
- Complete metamorphosis
Food Source:
- Larva: Depends on bee milk and bee bread which are the products of pollen from the workers
- Adult: Nectar as their main source of energy, pollen as protein and nutrients


Wasps
Physical appearance:
- Mostly have two pairs of membranous wings: Forewings are larger than the hind wings
- Three segments on its body part: head, thorax, abdomen
- Has a stinger, a pair of compound eyes with a few ocelli or simple eyes, few or no thickened hairs like those of bees, three pairs of legs, a pair of antennae, mandible, some have striped abdomens
- Some species steal pollen or larvae of honey bees to feed their own larvae
- Life cycle: egg - larva - pupa - wasp (adult)
- Complete metamorphosis
Food source:
- Larva: They are parasites or parasitoids that depend on adult wasps to feed them with paralyzed insects
- Adult: Ominivorous where some feed on fruits, meats or carrions and nectar
